The Importance of Access to Mental Health Support
Mental health struggles are more common than many realize. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 1 in 8 people worldwide live with a mental health condition. Depression alone affects over 280 million people globally, while anxiety impacts more than 300 million. These numbers are staggering, yet they only scratch the surface of the reality that so many face every day.
The good news? Investing in mental health support yields incredible returns. WHO reports that for every $1 invested in scaled-up treatment for depression and anxiety, there is a $4 return in improved health and productivity. Beyond the economic impact, the personal and societal benefits are immeasurable—lives are saved, hope is restored, and communities grow stronger.
Breaking the Stigma & Building Solutions
One of the biggest challenges in addressing mental health is breaking the stigma that surrounds it. Many people, especially young individuals, hesitate to seek help because they fear judgment, rejection, or simply don’t know where to turn. This is why accessible tools and services like Talkiatry are so crucial.
So, how do we get these essential resources into the hands of those who need them most? One answer is investment. Many members of our community have supported startups like Talkiatry, recognizing the transformative impact of behavioral health innovations. When we invest in mental health, we invest in people—empowering them to find strength, resilience, and hope.

Breaking The Silence: Part II- Making A Difference
Lauren Kane, January 2025
Earlier this month, I shared a deeply personal story with you—a story about my teenage years, when I struggled with feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness. I listened to the voices around me telling me that I was nothing, that I had no worth. In those dark moments, I felt completely alone, believing there was no way out.
Last year, I had the privilege of sharing this story with an audience at the Orchestrated Connecting conference. It was the first time I had spoken my story out loud to a group. Standing on that stage, my voice shook, my words hesitant, and the out-of-body experience was overwhelming. Yet, I knew how important it was to speak my truth—not just for myself, but for others who might be facing similar battles in silence.
I shared my story that day to introduce someone truly remarkable: Dr. Georgia Gaveras, co-founder of Talkiatry. We were there to discuss the behavioral health struggles that so many young people face. As we spoke, I had a profound realization—if I had access to a tool like Talkiatry when I was younger, my story might have been different. Instead of feeling isolated and afraid, I could have reached out, talked to someone, and received the help I desperately needed.
